Bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease that should be checked by your dentist. If caught and treated early it is reversible with v little permanent damage. If however left untreated it can easily progress to advanced gum disease and more teeth are lost to gum disease than tooth decay.There is growing evidence linking gum disease to heart attacks, strokes and also type 2 diabetes. Gum disease is made worse in smokers or people with a family history of gum problems. Hygienists – to help prevent bleeding gums and gum disease

Bleeding gums are evidence that gum disease is present in the mouth.

If caught early enough this is called gingivitis and is reversible by regular visits to our Hygienists and good dental hygiene. However, left unchecked this usually progresses to more advanced gum disease which damages the bone supporting the teeth. Although this is irreversible it can be stabilised by seeing our Hygienists and following their advice.

Gum disease is the most common cause for teeth to be lost and there is a lot of evidence linking it with chronic heart disease, strokes and premature and low birth weight babies.

People often ignore bleeding gums however if your eyes bled every day you touched them you would seek urgent help! If your gums bleed the surface area can be equivalent to a post-it note and if this size area bled on your skin every day again you would seek urgent attention. Bleeding gums are a warning of gum disease and you should seek the help of a Dentist and their Hygienists.
